
VLIR-UOS scholarship supports students whose research or studies may hold the keys to the answers to global and local challenges. The scholarship is awarded to students and professionals from Africa, Asia or Latin America to study in Flanders. Travel grants are also provided to Flemish/European students to do fieldwork/internships in Africa, Asia or Latin America. VLIR-OUS support partnerships between universities or universities of applied sciences and arts, in Flanders and in the South, looking for innovative responses to global and local challenges. It stimulate cooperative projects between professors, researchers and lecturers and award grants to students and professionals in Flanders and the South. Finally, we help to reinforce higher education in the South and the development-relevant internationalization of higher education in Flanders.

Eligible Countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Bolivia, Cameroon, Cuba, Cambodia, DR Congo, Ethiopia, Ecuador, Guinea, Haiti, Indonesia, Kenya, Madagascar, Morocco, Mozambique, Nicaragua, Niger, Palestinian Territories, Peru, Philippines, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Vietnam, Zimbabwe.
Host Institutions : Multiple higher education institutions across the world.
Type of Degree : Masters Degree.
Fields of Study : 15 master’s courses. Please check the how to apply section for the courses.
Number of Scholarship Seats Available : About ten new students each year.
Host Country : Belgium partnered with other countries.
VLIR-OUS Scholarship Requirements
Each of the courses and the university might have it specific admission requirements, below is the general requirements;
- Should be a national of the 29 eligible countries and must be a resident at the time of application.
- Age: Candidates cannot be older than 35 on January 1 of the year of intake for an initial master and 45 for an advanced master.
- Professional background and experience: Preference will be given to candidates employed in higher education, government or civil society, or those targeting a career in one of these sectors. Private sector or newly graduated candidates with no work experience may also be considered if they provide a strong motivation.
- Candidates may apply for only one ICP Connect scholarship application per year. Candidates cannot receive any other scholarship or grant to participate in this study program or another program simultaneously.
- Candidates may not have previously received a scholarship from the Belgian government and may not have enrolled in a study program at a Belgian higher education institution before January 1 of the year of intake.
VLIR-OUS Scholarship Benefits
Successful candidates can enjoy full tuition fees cover, travel, insurance and living expenses (board and lodging). The benefits are provided up to the duration of your course.
